Genesis 11:5-9
5 But the LORD came down to see the city and the tower which the sons of men had built. 6 And the LORD said, “Indeed the people are one and they all have one language, and this is what they begin to do; now nothing that they propose to do will be withheld from them. 7 Come, let Us go down and there confuse their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech.” 8 So the LORD scattered them abroad from there over the face of all the earth, and they ceased building the city.
9 Therefore its name is called Babel, because there the LORD confused the language of all the earth; and from there the LORD scattered them abroad over the face of all the earth.

Different languages have evolved due to cultural and relative geological isolation during the age when language was being developed. Due to the difficulty in travel the world was a much much larger place at that time. As time has gone on because of war, conquering, and subsequent cultural assimilations, languages have become more blended and continued to evolve.
The story of Babel in the Bible is just a legend and isn't based on any factual evidence whatsoever.

Without getting into religion, which can be traced to geographical superstitions, different languages arose because different cultures called those things around them different things using different sounds. All language is specific to your society. "Knocked up" in the US has a completely different meaning than in the UK. Imagine your confusion if your parents had taught you all your life that the color you now know as red was really green. That doesn't change the visual spectrum of that color, only the name you use. If religion played a part, re; Tower of Babel, then how do you explain the fact that birds and other animals have different languages? Don't forget that we humans were animals first.

because God saw that when Men were united their wickedness grew and he declared that nothing would be impossible for man.
He confounded mans language so that men could not monopolize on the Oppression of others and formed a natural barricade to minimize the damage ONE single wicked human could take advantage of all the others.
it was also done to the Age and life span of man, it was changed from around 900 years to about 120 when men will die. If God did not do this also, it is written there would be NONE saved.

Cocky people thought they could build a tower that would reach to Heaven. God saw that they were working together, so He scattered them abroad and confused their language. There is only one way to get to Heaven - through believing that Jesus is the Son of God, repenting of your sins, being forgiven by Jesus. When anyone tries a different way, God will take care of them just as He did the people who tried to build the tower of Babel.

When people are isolated their language drifts apart.
Not sure why you think the bible would be any kind of reference for this or anything.

Isolated populations with minimal interaction. I doubt any Bible will give you an accurate answer, but that's just a SWAG.
