Saddam ruled from Baghdad like the kings of Iraq before him, and oppressed the Kurds.
The Kurds are ethnically different and seldom consider themselves Iraqis. They traditionally hold zero loyalty to any Baghdad regime. The Kurds were subjugated by force in 1922 by the British, compelling them to accept the rule of the Brits' puppet regime in Baghdad.
It is not suprising then that Saddam continued the murderous suppression of the Kurds. He used poison gas on them, because the British occupation forces taught the Iraqi puppet regime how to use poson gas. Saddam also used poison gas against Iran during that 8-years war.
We are now supposed to forget that Saddam's murderous regime was armed by the US during the Reagan administration. And now we are expected to swallow the Bush B.S. about fighting "terrorism," conveniently forgetting that Saddam Hussein was the worst enemy of Osama Bin Laden.

Let's see:
During Saddam's rule:
Some 175,000 Iraqis were taken prisoner and casualties were estimated at over 85,000
While the major causes of death before the invasion were heart attack, stroke, and chronic illness, the risk of dying from violence after the invasion was 58 times higher than in the period before the war. The rise in the death rate was mainly due to violence and much of it was caused by U.S. air strikes on towns and cities. The use of air power in areas with lots of civilians appears to be killing a lot of women and children," Roberts told Reuters. (Les Roberts of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health)
US researchers estimate that 655,000 Iraqis, or around one in 40 in Iraq population, have died as a result of the 2003 US invasion of their country as revealed by the British journal The Lancet the other day.
As always the official figure avoided civilian casualties during and after the invasion, the independent study report by the US researchers revealed how huge the death toll has been in the occupied country.
The US research team sought to make an estimate of death in the post-invasion period from March 2003 to June 2006, and compared the mortality before the invasion from January 2002 to January 2003.
They randomly selected 47 sites across Iraq, comprising 1,849 households and 12,801 people and the interviewers asked householders about births, deaths and migration and if there had been a death since January 2002 and, if so, asked to see a death certificate to note the cause.
Of the 629 deaths recorded, 547, or 87 per cent, were in the post-invasion period.
Democratic imperialism has led to more deaths not fewer. This political and military failure continues to cause scores of casualties among non-combatants. It is a failure that deserves to be a serious subject for research."
Answers are on the Web and pretty much consistant.
Just key in words "death toll Iraq before after"
and you will get an even more detailed picture.
