A friends cat nearly died of starvation a few years ago, until someone looked in his mouth and found a small twig wedged across his back teeth.
Have a good look in his mouth, it could be an obstruction, or it could be just a sore throat.
If it is a throat infection, he will need to see the vet anyway, as it could be a symptom of something more serious such as cat flu, or the feline form of aids.

Definately have a vet look at him...and soon. Cats that don't eat for more that 3 days are at risk for liver problems.
Many things could be causing him not to eat including and obstruction, bad teeth, or an illness that could be causing him not to be hungry. If he is trying to eat, but having a hard time, then its one of the first two, and your vet should have a look at his mouth.
You can try yourself if you'd like, to see if there is a twig or something, but be very careful not to get bit. If his mouth is painful, he won't like you opening it.

There are a number of problems that might cause a cat to have difficulty eating, and none of them are good, so please take him to a vet.

Most likely he needs his teeth sorted out. Dental problems are very common in cats over 8 years old. Dentals require an anaesthetic to allow the teeth to be properly scaled and polished, and usually a few extractions are required too. Maybe antibiotics to clear up any infection. Please take kitty to vet ASAP, he could be in serious trouble if this has gone on for 3 days or more!

You gave too little information here, did it start suddenly or has it always been like that? Is the cat salivating, gagging?
If it started suddenly then you are looking for teeth problem, foreign body i.e. bone wedged between upper molars or fish bone, needle stuck in the mouth/throat, mouth inflammation (stomatitis) and finally growth in the mouth/throat area. You really should see a vet to check this out.

I have a cat with acromegaly (recessed lower jaw) and he has a hard time eating as well. He often bites the edge of the bowl but I have switched him on the vet's advice to a flat dish with a mix of soft and hard food. Soft for more nutrients and the hard bits for clean teeth. Try using a flat feeding dish for your troubled kitty.

The first thing my vet always asks.. "is he eating?" when he is the vet isn't concerned.. when a cat stops eating he could be having internal problems and has to looked at by the vet. Try to get him there today.

Take him to the vet, to get him checked out for any possible sore teeth, or obstructions that would prevent him from eating properly.

Is it it's teeth? Try feeding it baby food until you can get a vets appointment.

What do you mean?

Is it his teeth rotting out?
Does he have something caught in his mouth?
Doesn't he like the food?
Did you out right change food?
Can he get to the food?
