My son is two and a half, and my first. My friends also gave birth the same year, so we all have children. My son though is different from the rest. He speaks fluently now, Greek and English. His grandmother is Greek and tells him fairy tales and he translates for me word for word. Yesterday, he sat down with me and began the myth of Hercules. For fifteen minutes he did not stop. I stared at him the whole time my mouth open. He counts to ten in three languages, knows both alphabets, can draw a letter or a number if I tell him to, can operate the DVD player perfectly and can rationalize with me. Is this normal? My friends' children don't so much as say mama yet. Anybody else see these things in their children?

WOW!!! What a little keener! *grin* He's so smart! Good for you mom! It shows me a couple of things...first, he is definately above average...both my kids were talking early and my daughter counts and does abc...my 4 yr old is doing simple math...but only in English. The second thing I see is that your bunny is spending a lot of time learning and the best place to learn is from mom and grandma. So good job, keep up the good work.

My sister in law is a kindergarten teacher and tells me to tell you to keep him stimulated especially when he gets into school...this is a potential problem because it's the smart kids who get into trouble..they are bored because they're waiting for everyone else to catch up! Get him involved in projects and stuff as he gets bigger.

Its perfectly normal for kids who have families who talk to them, read to them, and generally spend time with them to do the type of stuff you describe. Its also perfectly normal for a young child to know two languages if his family has more than one language.

It sounds kind of odd that your friends' two-year-olds (if they're two yet) don't say "ma ma" yet, but kids develop at different ages - so they're normal too.

If you live in a middle- or upper-middle-class suburb you may find that when your child is out and at pre-schools or school most of the other kids are like he is. If you live in a lower income area - mean as this sounds - your son will stand out because many times children from lower income areas don't have parents who talk to them a lot.

My almost three year old is so hyper, I could attach him to an electrical socket and light up the entire town! He will not sit down even for two minutes. He does not watch cartoons (this means he would have to sit still), he runs up and down the hall for hours, doesn't sleep during the day and falls asleep at long last at 2 in the morning! I take him for very long walks, to playhouses, trying to curb this energy, but it is useless. I have taken away sugar and chocolate, but nothing. He was born with developed muscle mass and is very strong for his age (he loves to upturn my cherry wood dining room table if you can believe it). How can I make him calm down?

Sounds to me that he is very well rounded! everyone has there pluses your son loves to learn yet he dose not love to sit in one spot!

You are very lucky! Kids develop differently and he seems to be advanced. Just keep him learning! My daughter started counting at around 18 mos in English now she counts in Spanish too. Her vocabulary is very good for a 3 yr old. I have seen children her age that barely talk.
Good luck!

Wow! Sounds like your son is highly intelligent. Nothing for you to worry about though, he'll still play with the others...they just won't be on "speaking terms"...so to speak. It's good that he's showing bilingual tendencies...that can only help him in the long run. Keep encouraging learning, read to him (and let grandma do it too!!) and just enjoy watching your son grow!!

WoW that's awesome. your son obviously enjoys learning. each child learns at a different pace, but you should be very proud and keep encouraging him. I would however stay away from putting down your friends children for what they can't do yet. it's not cool.

jeff foxworthy can start a new show, are you smarted then a pre schooler, and your son can be one of the kids.. ha ha.. your son is just really smart. It helps that he has a grandmother to teach him greek, and you to teach him English!! For a toddler to have to opportunity to learn two languages instead of one is awesome..
