For years, i have been learning chinese at this school every sunday for 2 and a half hours each time. i feel as if i'm not learning much, but my mom keeps pushing me. I want to stop, but she will not let me. What should i do? i'm not enjoying it and my mom expects me to know a lot and it is embarrasing when i'm with chinese friends of her and i can't say a thing. I AM REALLY HAVING A HARD TIME.

No matter whatever languages or subjects you are learning for whatever proposes, the learning process should be an enjoyable one (i.e. the teaching method is good, interesting and ...in another word may be the teacher is charming and make you want to keep up), otherwise, even you force yourself to memorize the text book, you would forget it immediately.

Try to talk to your mom seriously, express to her that you have no interest in learning Chinese and you are very discouraged by putting your effort on it and getting not much improvement, so, you wish to take a rest. Tell her that may be in someday, you would pick it up again.

It would never be too late to learn something, only it may take longer time when you get older.

I wish you good luck ... in giving up learning Chinese!

I go to Chinese school every Saturday (Hua Xia Xue Xiao) and I am 36. I really wish I started when I was younger. It's the sort of thing you will appreciate when you are older. Lots of US businesses are doing work in China and it can help you with your career in the future. Anyway, it sounds like you are frustrated by your mom's expectations and what you feel is your lack of progress and enjoyment in the class. You should express all of this to her. Maybe you can be in a different class or school and it will be better. I've been in several different classes and some were good for me and some weren't. Another suggestion is, if you really don't want to do the Chinese thing, propose something else to your mom that she might approve of, a new activity for you... art class, sports, something like that, and perhaps she'll agree. She may just want you to broaden your horizons and you can still do that by pursuing something of greater interest to you. Good luck. Zhu ni hao yun. Zai jian!

Being 13 is a very tough age especially with the one person that can help you to grow into a young lady is spending all her time on the computer. Her reaction to you is very odd and it seems to me that she may have some issues she either won't talk about or is not aware of. The fact that you had to go to such extremes to get her attention is awful. If there is another adult in the house maybe you need to express your thoughts and feelings to them. If not then maybe at school someone to talk with. They may not be able to do something about the way your mother acts but maybe they can help you to deal with growing up and not to feel so terrible about the way your mother makes you feel. Everything will be alright this situation is just temporary, and yes you may have 5 years before you can go it alone but stick it out as best you can. If you have someone in your life that maybe you can stay with for a while that might be healthy for you.

just keep at it.

And to know chinese would be a HUGE BOON to you later in life.

Mom is 100% right at this moment.

A doing things that you find hard, is also helpful... Just grin and bear it.. when your 18 and out the house, if you decide later you dont wanna do it.. thats your call.

Either tell her or keep taking the lessons and focus more when you take them, knowing other languages can be a good thing you can get high paying jobs as a translater when you grow up.
