If I didn't think we were going to get married, I would have never spent so much on such a gift. Is it wrong to want it back?

It is not wrong to want it back, however the key word here is GIFT. Since it was a gift even though you would not have given it if you knew you were not going to get married, it was a gift.

Unless the person wants to return it I would put it down as learning from your mistakes and move on.

You know and your would be partner knows that the gift by its cost could only have been given in the belief that yuou both would marry. However if you did the breaking up ,you should not be wanting to get it back . After all the gift was not given conditionally.

I think so. A gift is a gift. I, however, always give all the gifts back. Why would I want something from someone who broke up with me or I broke up with?

Its not wrong to want it back b/c you're human. We as humans can be go to the extreme of every emotion at times, which just shows that no one is perfect. Having said that I want to point out that I answered the question that you asked.
Now, I'm going to answer the underlying question: Yes, it is wrong for you to ask for it back. You gave it to the person and it no longer belongs to you. I know you thought that you would marry the person, but sometimes things don't go as planned. Thats life, you live and you learn.
An old saying goes: If you ever want to make God laugh, tell Him your plans.

Yes it's wrong to want it back now.

A gift is a gift, you don't go putting strings on it because then it isn't a gift it is a bribe or something.

good luck for the future though.

You can't go around buying people! So hard luck you are the loser. 'That's the way it is, some things will never change' I feel sorry for you.. Remember there are plenty of pebbles on beach try giving those as a present? There are loads of them and they are free! Good Luck, you sound like a giver, stop giving! do some taking. Regarde
