We can't know for sure but after studying the matter from a cultural/historical perspective it would seem that the Jewish people of Jesus' day were looking for a Messiah who would be a deliverer from the Roman oppression and not one who would deliver them from the eternal penalty of their sins by offering Himself up as a sacrifice.

So when Jesus didn't make Himself King and start raising an army people probably thought that He was just another phony who was putting Himself forward as the coming Messiah in order to gain a following for Himself.

Jesus wasn't who he said he was

ANYONE can CLAIM to be the messiah but if you don't do what the messiah is supposed to do than you ain't it

Jesus didn't fulfill the qualifications, the things that were supposed to get done didn't get done

of COURSE the Jews rejected him

why in the world would they continue to believe in a false messiah when G-d warned agaisnt that very thing?

The inhabitants of Jerusalem did not change their opinions. He was crucified by certain members of the Sanhedrin. The 'crowd' that called for his death did not even represent the entire governing body of Jerusalem, let alone the general population of Jerusalem.
