If you have collected air camples how do you test them for contaminants such as volite organic compounds (VOC’s)?

You would send your sample to a lab for analysis. They will report the results in a concentration such as milligrams / cubic meter.

Volatile organic compounds would be analyzed by GC/MS an instrument that costs $50-100k on the low side. If it is an aldehyde, the best way is the technique LC/MS. Each analyte or type of analyte has a specific method. There are probably 10 VOC methods (at least) depending on what you want to test.

The main bodies that govern the thousands of testing methods are NIOSH and OSHA. The main OSHA page is the first reference, NIOSH the second.

The air is filtered through a trap which collects the contaminants. I believe it is powdered silica which releases the contaminants when it is heated before injection into a GC.

try a simple way, put a wet sponge in the middle of a room for around 8-12 hours then look before rinsing, this should tell you some things that we breath, table, bed chair and sofa, might amaze you to find the items in question.
