Because the price isn't supposed to matter -- and frequently doesn't. I have received gifts of less value, that meant a great deal to me, because of what they represented, because they were from the heart; and I've received gifts that were expensive that meant nothing, except the monetary value, or even less because they obviously weren't sincere. Also, you shouldn't tell someone the price of the gift you get for them, becuase it's not meant to make them feel guilty, or as a sign of how expensive the gift they get for you (if any) should be. It's just not supposed to be about money, it's supposed to be about emotion/feeling/caring/affection...

A "gift" is something with emotional value, given to you for who you are, and not for anything you have done.
Putting a price on the gift would diminish its emotional value.

To assign a dollar value to the gift would be an entirely different subject, than to simply accept it as a compliment from the giver.

well because maybe they only spent 99 cents on it or 5 bucks. It shouldn't be the price of the gift but the thought that counts. Unless you're really picky and it's your parents, otherwise just thank them and forget about it.

Only a shallow minded person would even consider asking for or even wanting to know the price of a gift.

Gifts aren't supposed to be about how much they cost, but how much thought and caring went into the selection. If it's just about a dollar figure - just give and ask for cash.

its rude to ask someone what they spent on you, and it shows no class to brag how much you spent on something for another
