We don't know.
Even if there were a god, that still doesn't tell us why the hell we do exist. You would just be moving the question back one to, "Why the hell does God exist?"
Perhaps one day, we'll figure out why the universe exists. Then, perhaps, we can put the pat answer of, "God did it", to rest and get past our superstitions.

We're here because we're here. I have said this before, each and every one of us were created out of a union in which 1 sperm out of over 2 billion raced to an egg to form a unique person. We got the free ticket to this amusement park or hell whatever you choose to call it. It's a beautiful opportunity when you consider the other option of running out onto the towel, sheet or daddy or mom's leg and flushed away. We did it, now make what you will of it. No one needs you, no one cares only you need to care about you and enjoy what you will. The only rule I have for life is "Do no harm". Enjoy yourself.

Well if an atheist were to answer, I'm sure they'd say "for the same reason as the ape and so on..."
If a Muslim were to answer he'd say "to kill the infidels, and get my virgins in Heaven"
If a Mormon were to answer he'd say" To have as many wives and children before I die as is humanly possible"
If a Scientology's were to answer he say "So I could live on my own little planet where science fiction authors can become the head of a weird Hollywood religion"
