This is what I need to repair:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\i8042prt\Parameters

I tried to make a change there in order to install a mouse but now it doesn't recognize my keyboard too!
Here is what Microsoft say:

I believe System Restore doesn't exist on Win 2000 - but it would be your first option if it did.

Windows repair from the CD is a better option for you, because recovery console is a command line based environment which would be pretty tough for you to perform the necessary tasks.

All the Windows repair option does is re-copy all the files back to the Windows directory and apply the registry settings.

Hope this helps.

Recovery console is the best solution if you have it in 2000.

If you repair by Windows CD, sure you will lose all of your updates.

The repair wont delete any of your data and can fix most problems, but not all. If you do the recovery, I believe that will delete your data, but this will 100% fix any software system related problem.

Your best bet is go to www.Microsoft and you will find exactly how to restore part of the program.
