If we would use all of the money and effort to develop alternatives to oil, we wouldn't have people asking questions such as these in the wrong category.

The US gets most of its oil from Canada. In the year following 9/11 the oil companies closed down most of the refineries in the south. Because of the lack of refined product demand was up.
The war in Iraq is for the oil yes, not to steal it but to control how it is paid for thereby protecting our economy. Bur the war has also thrown attention off of the fact the oil companies created their own demand by closing their refineries and blaming it on hippies from Greenpeace.
Since when in history has a tree squatter had power to do anything to the oil companies? NEVER.
