Who is the first person you contact? For example, a Braque painting with markings on the back of the painting that dates it to Braques period. It is an oil on board and signed. Is the Braque committee the right people to get in contact with? If not, then who? Any specific names and contact info would be wonderful. Thanks in advance.

The auction houses cannot and will not authenticate works of art. They might recommend who to go to, but if you already know that there is a Bracques committee, they're the ones to go to with this.

Locally, go to an Auction House and ask if there is a fee for them to look at your painting.

At one time these prestigious auctions houses, Christies and Sothebys accepted a photo of the painting to be reviewed by their experts.

I don't know if they still provide this service. There was no charge. I don't know if they still provide a free service.

Look on both websites, there may be information.
