Today is the day. When you give him the new seat, explain what a big boy privilege it is and that if he wants to keep his new seat, he has to leave his buckle on.

Changing the seat isn't going to prevent the discipline problem you are having now. The problem isn't the seat -the problem is your son is unbuckling it.

Even if you move to a booster a booster with a back and a 5 point harness is way safer than a "positioning" booster that just uses the vehicles seat belt.

So use the safest seat for your child -whatever that is for his height and weight. And then solve the discipline problem. Most parents find the rule "The vehicle doesn't move if the seatbelt is undone" rule to be quite good. The first few times be on the way somewhere fun.

Check with your DMV regarding your state laws and if he is big enough then switch him.

However, you need to teach him about leaving his seatbelt buckled. He is 5 and can understand the dangers of being unrestrained in a car. Tell him that if he unbuckles while the car is moving and you get into an accident that there is a good chance he will not be able to see mommy and daddy again. Sounds harsh but my kids know that and do not ever unbuckle their seatbelts. Be sure to reward and praise him for remembering the rules.

My three year old is in a booster seat. But he is larger than your son. Go by the weight on the seat box's, most say that the minimal weight is about 40lbs. Also check height requirements. It's not about age. Its about size when it comes to carseats.

Check with the state that you live in.
The state of IL requires a child to be in a car/booster seat until they are 8 years old.
Type in a search of: STATE CAR SEAT LAW

hes old enough and big enough to ride in the regular graco boosters (the ones that sit on the seat and dont have a back to them...they run between $24-$30)

Most of them are safe at 40lbs. I would say now is a great time!! Read the box of the one you choose it will have a weight guide on it. Just make sure you buy one that will last. A lot of them go to 80lbs.
