To apply for a firearms license in NZ: it involves filling in a form, paying a fee, and sitting a written test about the arms code. You will need a referee that has known you for at least 18 months in New Zealand (which is a problem if you have just got here).

As far as owning guns is concerned, you are able to have as many shotguns, rifles (bolt action, lever action etc.) and semi-autos you want. To own pistols or military style assault rifles you need to apply separately and satisfy certain criteria.

Gun ownership is a privilege not a right. You have to demonstrate you are of good repute and apply for a licence before you can own a gun. Certain categories of gun are banned completely and some, such as handguns, have much greater restrictions than rifles. Storage of guns and ammunition is controlled by law, for a start they must be kept locked up.
Unlike the USA where everyone seems to have a gun, people in Australia are not gun owners, certainly not in the cities. They are more common in the country.

In NZ you need a license to own a gun. You cannot carry it around with you like they do in USA. It needs to be unloaded & locked up, kept separately from any ammo.
Gun owners here mainly have their guns for hunting and pest control (and maybe for sport), not self defence and protection.
