Ice cream may contain a stabilizer that is derived from seaweed. It is not however a basic ingredient of ice cream.

I assume you mean seaWEED. I know that lots of dairy products (commercially available, not the homemade stuff) contain carrageenan, which is extracted from a type seaweed. It's gelatinous, and it acts as a thickener and a stabilizer in things like ice cream and yogurt--especially the low-fat or non-fat varieties. It's a non-nutritive, natural product.

Well, carrageenan is NOT a gelatine like product, I don't know where that came from, it's a colorant, that gives (in this case) ice cream the characteristic "off white yellowish" color that we're familiar with in say, vanilla ice cream.......Agar-agar is the substance that is gelatinous........Here you go......
agar; agar-agar
Definition: [AH-gahr; AY-gahr] Also called kanten and Japanese gelatin, this tasteless dried seaweed acts as a setting agent and is widely used in Asia. It is marketed in the form of blocks, powder or strands and is available at Asian markets and health-food stores. Agar can be substituted for gelatin but has stronger setting properties so less of it is required.
Enjoy!!

it has a thickening agent that is found in seaweed - that's not a big deal - besides real seaweed is very high in vitamins and minerals
