If Jesus and God are the same and he was not really the son of God, then how do you explain certain lines in the Bible?

"Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do"
(Luke, Chapter 23, Verse 34)

It would appear from that line that he is talking to himself. Please clarify this to me.

You have to admit that if you don't come from a Christian background that the concept of the trinity can be confusing to outsiders.

Thank you for your answers.

Who have you been talking to that says the the Father are the Son are the same person? That is NOT what the Trinity is all about.. Trinitarian teaching is that there is ONE God. This God is manifest to man as the Father the Son and the Holy Spirit..
I know this is a concept that most people can even start to understand so I'll try to help..
In geometric space there are three dimensions Hight, Width, and Breadth. Hight is infinite and because of definition of that term contains all space. The same with Width and Breadth. Yet hight is not width and width is not breadth. Three separate dimensions yet only one space. God revels many of His attributes through His creation. So Like Hight, The Father is infinate. By that definition He is all the God there is. But the Son is also God and infinite and there fore all the God there is. The Holy Spirit is the same, God and all the God there is. Yet these three separate person are the one true God... Jim

The concept of the trinity is not only confusing to outsiders but also to Christians. Because God is greater than us we can't totally understand Him with our limited intelligence. If we could explain everything about God would we not be higher than He is?
The best illustration that I have come up with is as follows: we can experience water either as a solid (ice), a gas (steam) or a liquid. But the essence is still all the same.

The word trinity is not in the Bible, but Jesus makes a clear distinction when says to the apostles in Matthew 28:19 "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,..."
Also Peter makes a clear distinction in 1.Peter 1:2 " ... who have been chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through the sanctifying work of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and sprinkling by his blood..."

Jesus is the essence of God but became human to bear the punishment of sin for all humans. He was the only perfect human who ever lived on this earth, and He wanted to show us what our relationship with God can be like again once we accept his gift of dying in our place.

The term "Son of God" is not a physical term, but a spiritual term and a relational term. Does not a human son bear many characteristics of his earthly father, and yet he is a distinct different person?

God reveals Himself as "God the Father", "God the Son" and "God the Holy Spirit" -- they are distinct personalities but of the same essence.

Hope this helps a bit.

Someone once said: "If there is something about God that I don't understand, it's a place to kneel down and worship Him, because He is greater than I. "

Yes, the trinity is hard to understand. But what you have to remember is that although Jesus is fully God, he is also fully human. He can pray to God the Father as a human being would, for that reason. Keep in mind also that the three parts of the Trinity are each a separate personality, although they are all part of the same indivisible being. Three facets on a diamond can each be a separate thing, and yet still part of the whole. I'm afraid analogies are the best explanation there is.

Hey, it's a confusing concept even for believers. We fallible humans have tiny brains that cannot understand such a sublime truth. But God is three persons in one godhead, each with a distinct personality and purpose. I've thought about how to describe this for years and can't come up with anything better than this: a man might be a dad, a brother and a husband. He has different roles he plays for each personality. It doesn't make him different people, but I suppose if you were talking to a child or someone with diminished mental capacity, it might be a difficult concept for that person to grasp.

It's certainly a flawed explanation, but again, it's the best I can do.

Luke 23:34
34Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots. Jesus Christ is the son of God, they are one in spirit but not in human form. God sent his only son to be born a virgin, symbolizing purity in all. God gave his son to be a sacrafice for the sins of the world. Jesus is simply telling God not to punish those that crucified him. I believe in the Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Jesus the man had a Father as do all human beings. He was conceived by the Holy Sirit within the womb of a virgin. Within him also dwelt the fullness of the Godhead bodily, but when he walked on the earth as the human being who had come to save man from sin he operated in his flesh. Because he was perfectly sinless he could shed his blood as the perfect sacrifice for sin because as the bible says in Hebrews 9:22 And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.

edit:

Sorry, didn't answer completely. Because Jesus was a man he prayed to his Father, who is God, as he taught us to do.

Good question. God manifested himself in three main forms. In the old testament, he was God the Father. After God saw the need the need to save the life of humanity, he decided to manifest himself as Jesus Christ (the son) so he would be sacrifice. The only way to save humanity was for God to be sacrifice in order to pay for their sins, After Jesus resurrected and went to heaven, he manifested himself as the Holy Ghost. That is why they are called the Holy Trinity.

that's always been a tough one for me to explain- the best that my mind can comprehend is the fact that we are three also-- the id the ego and the super ego-- or flesh, spirit and soul. without the flesh the spirit and soul still are there- so perhaps separated from one another they take on another entity? perhaps they are the same yet different? all I know is "the Word became flesh and dwelt among us" Jesus was the word of God and yet He was God-- who are we that we should say to the potter- why have you made me? we cannot even comprehend the mind of God!!!
