I have been working in West Africa for the last 18 months. My time off is pretty random and not really set to 2 months on two weeks off, but that is the average. I am not working when I am on time off.

Sadly, US citizens have to file and pay taxes on earnings made outside the country. Your schedule has nothing to do with this.

You will also likely have to pay taxes in the country where you worked but you can probably get a foreign tax credit for this and apply it against your taxes in the US.

Your income is fully taxable in the US. You probably are not eligible for the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion if you return to the US during your off periods. If you stay outside the US you may qualify for it, though. Alternatively you can claim a credit for any foreign income taxes paid. (You can't do both, however.)

Get a copy of IRS Pub 54 from the IRS website. It will explain everything that you need to know about working outisde the US as far as taxation is concerned.

You can do your taxes in America. Think about it every year we have men and women coming back from being over seas. Military men and women and contractors that work for the government. If you have your W-2s you can take them to a place and they can do your taxes. Its just like you would do them if you worked in America the whole time.

You probably have to get someone in Africe to do your taxes. I think they have different laws and such like other countries and it's been hard for us to find someone in the US that has experience in overseas taxes. Jennifer
