Computer viruses are programs or files that do bad things to your computer. They are mainly targeted at either wiping out your files or downloading/ doing things that you don't want your computer to do, such as downloading useless files or more viruses. Some viruses will shut down and restart your computer over and over again, damaging your computer. Another one, a long time ago, was known to play "Yankee Doodle" at 5:00PM every day through your PC speaker (the one built in that plays beeps and little tones). Antivirus programs scan for them with a database of virus names. If files match the names and attributes of a virus on the list, then it's classified as a virus and when the scan is done, the viruses are gathered up and wiped out.

Computer Viruses are "bad" programs that do things the user does not want to happen - such as delete files. Anti-virus programs use multiple techniques to detect and remove viruses. Currently, only the Microsoft Windows operating system is plagued by viruses, as well as other forms of "malware" (trojans, spyware, adware). Most modern, professional operating systems such as AIX, Solaris, Mac OS X, Linux, and OpenBSD are virus free.
