I know they were in small boats, and probably outgunned by larger, heavily armed patrol boats. But, they were armed, wouldn't you at least fight or speed off in another direction? To me they gave in too easily when this all could have been avoided.

If you are not doing anything wrong, why do you follow Iranian boats into Iranian waters? To me, the British messed up when they let themselves into custody of some sort. They should have just held to their postion in the water. If the Iranians fired on them, then we see who is the aggressor don't we.

I only have one, just one question to ask? Why, didn't the RN seaman / marines fight?? The fact that they just sat there and allowed the Iranians to pick them up as meek as lambs isutterly disgraceful! They are a disgrace to the Queen, country and flag they serve! Moreover, their behaviour and conduct on TV leaves a great deal to be desired! If this is the so called UK Modern upgrades fighting military services, we just might as well rely on the boy scouts and girl guides to patrol, defend and do they job for us. No doubt at least they'd have the guts to stand and fight, irrespective of the odds!
20 plus years ago our miltary once again proved victorious in secruring the Falklands, looking at the miserable rag tag youths comprised of the RN's military might serving in the Gulf, degrading the UK with their aplogies and wahtever, its a complete and utter disgrace to all ex serving UK miltary personnel. Could you ever imagined this is WW11 or the Falklands?
They should all be court martialled and dismissed the service. U go into the military to defend, fight and stand up for your country. They are no better than the Arabs or the Iranians - they've just messed up Western civilization to the hilt.
Not only that, they lacked the guts to fight!

From what I understand they were ordered by their Commander to not resist and in the military, right or wrong, you follow the orders of your superior officers. It's pretty cut and dry, Sure, they could have resisted but would have wound up seriously wounded or dead. I am surprised though the British navy didn't do more or even call for air support to try and intercept the Iranian ships, they sort left these sailors hung out to dry for lack of a better term.

British rules of engagement prohibit the soldiers from firing on Iranian's, even if fired upon. They were out manned, out gunned. Firing back would have been suicide.
The British Navy was once a major force. No longer. It;s closer to the size of our Coast Guard. Half the British fleet is to be mothballed. They can no longer defend themselves.
The American rules of engagement allow our forces to fight back. This recently happened in Northern Iraq. The American forces chased the Iranians back across the border.
The Brit's gave in a long time ago when they ceased being a Military.

They were to busy focusing on the boat they had to search when the Iranians got them and they were expecting the Royal Navy helicopter to tell them if someone was in the area so they were obviously taken by surprise.

The Iranians are lucky they did give up without a fight or they would be in the biggest fight of their lives right now, which may be the case anyway.

They could`nt speed of or attack the Iranians because firstly they were quite taken aback in facing the Iranian navy in Iraqi waters.Secondly , if they tried fleeing away it would mean that they were tresspassing in Iranian waters and would appear as if they were trying to escape from getting caught.

I believe they were ordered not to resist by their commander. I was chatting with some angry Brits and that is what they were saying. I will have to see if I can find out who ordered their surrender.

If they had sped of the Iranians would probably have shot them and maimed them or killed them. At least they are alive at the moment.
