I'd focus on a good Japanese text book to learn how to read the language and rent good movies that are dubbed or are otherwise have a Japanese sound track. These should be available in most cities or through the Internet.

We met a Romanian who spoke perfect English and he taught himself using American movies.

Visit your library.Most have languages on tape/CD to learn.
