I have a Dane with a herniated disc in her neck It happened 2.5 years ago. Surgery to correct her problem would have been @ $10,000 with only a 30% chance of it even working. I initially had her on Predisone for 3 months and then she was off for 4 months and started acupuncture. She has had acupuncture since. At first it was weekly, then bi weekly now it is @ every 4-5 months. She is not on any pain meds, steroids or any other type of meds and hasn't been since I took her off Pred.
Since her injury she has earned an obedience title, rally title become a certified therapy dog is happy playful, tail wagging.
Check into the possability of acupuncture in your dogs case.

How comfortable are the steroid pills making your dog? This is such a difficult thing, especially in such a young dog. I think that the biggest thing you need to gauge is how comfortable the dog is on the medication and how will the medication affect his overall health (side effects?). If you think that the dog could remain on the medication long enough for you to save up for the procedure and the dog is not in excruciating pain on the meds it's worth giving him a shot, as long as you know that the surgery has a high rate of success. I don't believe it keeping dogs alive at any cost, but I'm also not one to jump the gun on euthanasia either.

I'm really sorry you are having to make this decision.

Check into alternative meds. Steroids over the long haul are a bad idea, too many side affects.

Surgery is also not a sure thing, but you may want to check out teaching hospitals. SOMETIMES, they will do it for a reduced price. Also check with any breed rescues in your area. They can sometimes find a vet who will do it for less.

Also, Pit Bulls do feel pain, but it is different for them. I've seen pits walk around on broken legs like nothing was wrong. This can be a good thing, as your dog may be "comfortable" long after another dog would be howling in pain! The down side of this is that he may injure himself further because the pain will not slow him down. Keep a close eye on him, but you may not need as many medications.

Can you put the dog on steriods and maybe set a web page with raffle items to get donations toward his surgery? I've seen it done before. Is there a time limit on the surgery (like if it's not done within 2 weeks, it won't help or we can't do surgery)? If there isn't, put the dog on steriods and save the money for surgery (like I said a raffle or other fund raiser may help).
