You have to be dedicated to the All-Father, Odin. Valhalla is reserved for Odin’s chosen warriors, Einherjar, but keep in mind that Valhalla is not the only hall in Asgard. Depending upon which Gods one devoted themselves to in life, the soul could go to any of the various God or Goddesses’ halls.
And no, you wouldn't necessarily have to be in the military or die in battle to end up in Valhalla, you would however have to have your life dedicated to the All-Father.

At best, you really only have a 50/50 chance of getting into Valhalla, even if you have dedicated yourself to Odin, wear a Valknut, die gloriously in battle, and are picked up by the Valkyrior.
Freyja, you see, gets first pick of the battle slain, and they go to her hall: Folksvangr.
It's much like Valhalla, though.
Different owner... different decor, probably... different menu... same entertainment.

You have to die bravely in Battle.
then the Valkyries come and take you to Odin's or to Freyja's hall.
