Bill in Kansas: I am a retired MSgt, USAF with 20 years and 24 days of active duty. I guess the Marines never taught you about what happens when you assume.

Now we'll see if they taught you anything about apologies. Thank you for your briefer service to our country.

I don't recall being attacked by any Iraqis, incidentally. Ever. Did I miss something?

I suppose we could go bomb the crap out of Wales and make the same claims. "It obviously improved our safety because the Welsh haven't attacked us. Thank President Bush."

It didn't. Nothing that has happened in Iraq has made me feel safer. In fact, quite the opposite has happened.

I'm more worried about my civil liberties.

I'm also more worried about the stupid people who think I'm a threat.

When the war started, my sister was harassed by a stranger at the mall because he thought a sticker on her car said something about Osama. It says OSM Angel or awesome angel. OSM are the initials of the baby she lost, combined with the word "angel." He told her to go back to her country. She looked at him and said, "I was born at the hospital down the street. Where would you like me to go?" After the confrontation, he followed her and her two children around the parking lot.

So, yeah, it has actually made my world a little less safe because my family and I look "foreign."

You could live under a rock your whole life and be pretty safe regardless of what goes on in the rest of the world, that doesn't mean we shouldn't take action.

Obviously you have not served your country, otherwise you would not have asked this question.

By taking the fight to the enemy, we avoid being attacked on our own soil. Basic military strategy. We are fighting an enemy of limited means. They are not an organized military and are limited to a single front.

If we stand ideally by and stop the forward battle, we open ourselves up to further attacks on our own soil.

Thus you are safer at home due to the fight being abroad. Simple logic.

10 years USMC -- I fought for my country and my freedom, what have you done for yours?

"(19 killed 3000 civilians, but 150,000 can only kill 3000 military?) "

19 terrorists killed 3000 civilians because they were CIVILIANS working in an office building that they didnt expect to get hit by a plane, not trained military personnel in tanks and Humvees expecting to be attacked.

I would hope our military forces could fight better than the average guy on the street.

Because you're supposed to believe Bush that all of the terrorists in the entire world are currently busy in Iraq, and that they are concentrating their sole efforts on killing US troops over there.

Granted, if that were true, and the world's entire terrorist population was in Iraq, you'd likely expect to see much higher US casualties. But you're not supposed to see the flaw in the logic. (19 killed 3000 civilians, but 150,000 can only kill 3000 military?)

It doesn't. It's a false sense of security.
The orphans of Iraq will seek their revenge on the kids of America in a few more decades.
That's totally unfair because they didn't have anything to do with this invasion.
It's Bush, this generation that failed them.
