Okay I have allergy-related-asthma and it usually comes out in spring/summer. Since I'm supposed to be taking prescription medication my mom thinks we dont need it and is very aganist strong pills plus she thinks doctors are just trying to get money. Who knows. I've tried to convince her. My question is what air filter (inexpesive...50-)and over- the -counter antihistamines and any other things I need for this season would you reccomend? I have wheezing, couging, runny nose, etc, more like a cold except with wheezing.

I would recommend using benadryl and/or claritin. (Not sure if they are the "same kind" of OTC). However, I use it as a preventive med for my 11 year old. He is asthmatic -- but sometimes he does need the doctor prescribed Rx to really fight the problem.

Have you been diagnosed as an asthmatic? I would also suggest that you get a diagnosis just to be sure.

When the weather finally gets hot - make sure you sleep in a well ventilated, cool area, which means sleeping with the AC as opposed to having a window open. The morning is the worst time for asthma/allergy sufferers.

Well i was always suspicious of doctors. I have a 5 year old son who already took medications for conditions such as epilepsy and heart problems. Indeed were necessary. Recently it was found he has an immune deficiency. He has gotten phenomena about 7 times a yr for the past several years. He has been diagnosed with asthma and allergies and reflux among other issues. Contributed by the immune deficiency and cilia disease he has so now at 5 years old he is on 6 different medications a day. As many as 4 times a day. I was amazed so young and so much medication. Though i will say i have seen a remarkable difference in him since his medical therapy got changed. I would talk to your doc in confidence if your getting no where with your mom. If your wheezing that alone is causing damage to your lungs in which you may regret later in life. You do need an asthma controller though the other things will help as well. air filter and antihistamines. Good luck. Don't worry about upsetting your mom. In the end she will understand medically you need to talk to your doctor and do what is best for you.

You can get HEPA masks in your local drug store. This would help for any air-borne allergies you may have. Also, Benadryl works great as an antihistamine. As for asthma, you are better off with a prescription one because some of the over the counter ones can increase your heart rate.

You can take Primatene tablets for asthma and an over-the-counter antihistamine. I don't know of any air filters for that price. We paid $200 for ours and it is a small one. If you get one with HEPA filters, those can cost as much as $80 for just the filter and they have to be replaced every three months. We bought an Oreck 2000, which does not need filters.
