Before I say anything, I would like to suggest that you post this question under "sociology," "psychology," etc. You will gain more insight.

Religion can be defined in so many different ways, but I will keep it short and sweet. If by "religion" you mean "faith," as in the sets of beliefs themselves, and not the institutions, then I can answer thusly: It serves in two ways, for the society as a whole, and for the individual. It helps maintain peace and order in a society by creating values and practices that promote the well-being of the community under the religion, most of which are based off of respect for your peers. The second, for the benefit of the individual, has to do with the individual's necessity for an explanation of two very important things: death, and one's purpose in life. Religion provides guidance and security. In a psychological point of view (not to undermine its spirituality, but rather regarding it from a colder stance), one could say that the belief that there is a greater power over things that one himself cannot control creates a feeling of security, or gets rid of the feeling of insecurity that the thought of life happening under random events creates.
Hope I was able to explain to your understanding.
Kind Regards,
Loup

Hi,
The word religon simply means a way of life. Yes it's that basic. And as you can see there are many many different religions in this crazy world. From Evolutionist thinking all the way to Scientology. Quit the spread of ideas on this little blue ball floating through space!

faith interior the theistic experience is poison. prepared faith masquerades as a "harvester of souls," whilst all it is, is a funds-making company scamming lots of mindlessly gullible and wretchedly desperate "souls." maximum historical religions have not survived and have been relegated to mythology and folklore. at the instant's faith will additionally be day after today's fable. regrettably, yet another one will spring up in its place and proceed to perpetuate the human conflicts born from non secular transformations. this is the way it is.
