It depends on the surgery being performed, the breed/mix of dog, size and age of dog and also the vets personal preference.

I also suggest that you get a pre-anesthetic blood panel done prior to surgery.



***Rompun is not widely used any more except in horses and other large animals..there are much better and safer meds for dogs*******

Alot of dogs are given a medication called Rompun that will cause a semi-drowsy state enabling a calmness and less stress for the animal before total anesthesia.Your Vet should test your animal for heart worm before inducing your animal because anesthetic and the presence of heart worm can be a fatal mixture.You can access information for this drug by searching "Bayer" or Rompun on the Internet.
