How many people would believe in evolution if Darwin had not written the Orgins of Species? (No cop-outs, answer truly. If he didn't write it, how could you still believe.)

Darwin wasn't the only person working on a theory of evolution at the time. He is just the most recognized.

darwin's not a saint, nor his he some evil man for his findings. was he right? nope. many major universities aren't even teaching evolution anymore because the evidence is against it. macro evolution that is, the change between species. there is plenty of evidence for micro evolution. that is when a species can gain or lose certain things to make it more adaptable, but if it was a moth to begin with, it's still a moth. look up the spotted moth. the new theory that previous evolutionists are now selling is called Punctuated equilibrium.
basically instead of saying a dinosaur tslowly over millions of years turned into a bird, it says that from out the egg of a dinosaur hatched a bird. because they cannot find any fossil evidence on combined species (all of the "missing links" have been scientifically proved false, infact they aren't even debated anymore by major scientists, most everday people aren't aware of this unless they are studying it). Anyways now they are saying that in isolated pockets around the world there was a complete jump in species (ex: dinosuar->bird). The only problem with that though is that one freak bird has to find another freak bird and mate to produce more freak birds. then the species has to jump again. so either way evolution or punctuated equilibrium, they both are false. regardelss if darwin had written the book or not there are always going to be bogus ideas that people come up with and try and make it fit into how the world looks today, rather than looking at the evidence first and then seeing what is so obviously the answer.

Considering the fact that evolutionary thought has a history dating back before Darwin and the fact that evolution is so plainly visible in the natural world I am quite sure we would still be right where we are today if Darwin hadnt came along.. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_evolutionary_thought

By the by, does anyone realize that in fact Darwins original works are no longer really valid as we have considerably expounded upon the foundation he and other naturalists laid for us.. He merely pointed us in the right direction and got the ball rolling.. we have added so much more real scientific knowledge since then that Darwin would be mighty surprised to see what has become of his original ideas.

If he had not written that then somebody else. I guess the world would be more religiuos, but since the DNA tests etc. we today can see that the human dna is very similar to the animals. So at least in the last 20-30 years somebody would pointed out that and write a book similar to Darwin's...

Probably a lot since Wallace and others were working on it too. Wallace in fact, help Darwin by sending him his notes because Darwin was a little farther ahead in the study. Plus, evolutionary theories go back to Antiquity.

Darwin didn't come up with the theory of evolution he came up with a mechinism to explain it. Hope this wasn't co-out answer for ya.

~~~ LA,,,,, You are under the assumption that if Darwin hadn't presented his theory that no other person on earth would have had a similar idea or if the Wright Bros. hadn't tried to fly we would still be grounded. The Chinese were hundreds of years ahead of western europeans in technology yet are rarely given acknowledgement or credit. This doesn't mean that europeans were not having some of the ideas that the chinese had. They just hadn't developed some of them yet. The chinese knew, just as europeans and everybody else in the world knew, about breeding the most common domestic animal that exists,,,Dogs,,, and created Pedigrees !! This is Blatant Evolution right before our eyes, sleeping with us next to the campfire or in our Modern Beds . From Chihuahuas to Great Danes, very few in between have the physical appearance of their Wolf DNA. Respectfully, You underestimate the ability of man to observe his environment and the individual's ability at Deductive Reasoning.
It's not like he was famous before he wrote it. He sat on his findings for about 20 years before publishing them, fearing the reaction he would get.
Darwin was simply the first one to come to this conclusion and publish his ideas. It wouldn't matter if John Smith had come to the same conclusion and written the Origin of Species, people would still believe it.
If Darwin had not written it, someone else would have, because the evidence is plainly visible. In fact other scientists of Darwin's day were already formulating similar theories to explain the observable evidence.
No way of knowing. Scientists believed that species evolved before Darwin. He just gave a good explanation for the reason behind it.
the reason why Darwin eventually published, after so much procrastination, was that Alfred Russell Wallace was about to publish something similar. the idea of evolution did not just appear out of thin air. naturalists had an inkling of the process of evolution for some time but had done no systematic research on it.
