I would say that the main reason for people being unhappy is the way they live there lives.

Happiness is defined also as confidence.

How can be people be happy when most just run around nowadays not doing anything vital to be confident and dissobeying Gods word.

Unquenchable desire. Even if people have enough, they always want more. Their never-ending desire for things is the main reason behind unhappiness. They would never be happy before having every little thing in the entire world; which explains why they'll never get happy. I guess modesty and gratefulness are the keys to utmost happiness.

Sin. Plain and simple. We screwed up. You may not believe in God and the Devil and all that, but that's what it is anyway. Just because you don't believe in something doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

C.S. Lewis wrote that when God created us He created us to "run" on a certain thing. (He likened this to a car running on gasoline, or petrol). That certain thing is God Himself. Since as a whole people have turned from God, we are trying to run on something we just can't run on, namely lust, greed, and selfishness. There is bound to be unhappiness without running on the right substance.

Sin is the cause of unhappiness, which causes separation from God, and belief in human interpretation instead belief in God's Word.

It is always easy to e critical of others and blame everything on others. Your happiness is not God's first priority. We should always choose character over comfort. We are never going to be totally happy here because this is not our final home. We are missing something. I find my happiness in helping others. I can totally forget my own problems when I serve others. : )
