I had a friend whose aunt was a Catholic nun. She was a missionary (I think in PNG, but don't quote me) and was staying with us for a while before taking my friend off to visit the mission. The sister was a very funny, approachable and understanding woman, by the way. She was well aware "someone like her" was far out of the experience of a bunch of Uni students in inner-city Sydney and went out of her way to make sure she knew we were doing our best to be as respectful and appropriate as possible.

Anyway, the thing that I've always found odd is that when she was saying goodbye, this nun kissed all the males on the cheek, and shook hands with all the women. Does anyone have any thoughts on that? I mean I don't know if it was just her, or if there's any "deeper" meaning behind it...just curious...

She was born and raised in a small country town in Australia. I don't think it was cultural.

And it certainly never even vaguely occurred to me it was a sexual orientation thing. I can be so outrageously naive sometimes it's scary. But in this case I guess I'm kinda glad really.

In Christian circles, I do likewise as a male, kiss the ladies cheek and shake hands. Often hug men, though.

Incidentally, celibacy was not enjoined in the Bible. Originally virgins surounded pagan priests. And celibacy has been debated among Catholics for years.

It was better to allow priests to have concubines that admit a false doctrine. And some popes had bastard children running around the Vatican. Think it was pope John 23 that bought his position with booty he stole as a retired pirate.

Because of his sexual excesses--women were afraid to enter church because he might have them hauled to his chamber.

To get rid of that "infallable" pope, they had to elect another (in France), but that didn't work, so they elected another (three popes).

To get the "infallables" to resign, they had to offer them a pension with pay.

Yes, the "time of the Gentiles" is fraught with more erros than the Jewish dispensation described in the Old Teatament.

This chaos was predicted by God, so do not be dismayed.

You didn't mention her ethnic/cultural/national background. It sounds like her manner of greeting people more likely comes from that background than from the fact that she is a nun.

This is not because she is a nun, because she is coming from west.
Other reason could be that she will be seen as lesbian if she kisses woman

Since priests & nuns are often called gay (whether they are or not) She was probably afraid of the gay label - just human nature.
