Ignore the person who said to feed only meat! Dogs are not carnivores! They are omnivores! If you really want you don't have to feed any meat (though I wouldn't recommend it). meat gives protein, but is low in fibre, phosphorus and calcium (for bone growth) and some essential vitamins (such as E), which are ESSENTIAL for the growing puppy. I would recommend Hills science diet, or a similar equivalent. As they are expensive though, I would recommend anything that says on the label that it is a complete and balanced diet, because by law they have to adhere to that claim. I myself have a 10 month old dobe and he's doing fantastically! Chicken necks and the occasional bone are OK as well to help keep teeth clean! Also, puppy foods are essential for puppies and generally specially formulated with correct protein amounts for growing puppies (they need more for muscle growth- especially large breeds). They do NOT make the puppies grow too fast or all gangly. In contrast, an adult diet for the puppy will retard/slow growth and not provide energy needed for the growing puppy.

A Doberman should NEVER eat puppy food, only adult food. Puppy food makes them grow too quickly, you end up with this huge puppy body on legs, muscles and joints that are meant to hold a puppy. You have seen those Dobermans that look gangly and spindly.. Eating puppy food. Way too much protein for a Doberman puppy.
Pedigree food is NEVER good for any dog, especially a Doberman. A dog with high energy, isn't going to get the nutrition it needs from a garbage dog food.
Iams, Eukanuba, all those supposed big name dogfoods are garbage, Purina isn't a good food for Dobermans ...
Stick with the good natural foods, lower protein 21-25% and a decent fat level 14-16%
Check out Wellness, it is a great food, good quality ingredients, nice healthy food and they eat less because it is a quality dogfood.
Iams, Eukanuba, Hills, Science Diet, Pro-Plan, and Purina are NOT preservative free, ALL contain ethoxyquin. (Ethoxy was developed by Monsanto as a rubber hardener and insecticide). It is believed to cause liver and kidney dis-ease, cancer, immune dis-ease, skin problems, birth deformities, and thyroid problems. And be aware of food containing BHA and BHT avoid at all costs.

How much to feed depends on the breed of dog and the type of food you are feeding. As for food stay away from foods such as Science Diet, IAMS/Eukanuba, Pedigree, Purina..these are all low quality grain filled foods. Some good choices would be Chicken Soup for the puppy Lover's Soul, Merrick, Fromm 4 STAR, Innova, California Natural, Earthborn, Taste of the Wild, Orijen just to name a few. ***laws, a Great Dane does NOT only eat 1.5 cups of food per day I don't care how low energy it is or what food it is being fed. Anyone that feeds that little is seriously starving their dog. A 3 month old Dane puppy would be eating 3-4 cups per day and at 6 months old 5-6 cups per day of a good quality food. I feed taste of the Wild to my Danes..my 4 year old 180# adult eats 4 cups per day, my 140# 8 month old eats 6 cups per day******

Stay away from store brands such as Pedigree, Purina, IAMS/Eukanuba, Science Diet, etc. They are loaded with corn, wheat, soy, beet pulp and/or by products.
Dogs are carnivores. They need meat and meat protein not grains.
Look for a good quality puppy food or all life stages food such as Canidae, Chicken Soup for the Puppy Lover's Soul,Wellness, Innova, California Natural, Timberwolf ,Solid Gold just to nmae a few.

I have owned dobermans for 18 years.
I feed a product called Preimum Edge chicken and rice.
It has no by products, fresh never frozen meat, no corn wheat or soy in it. Preserved all naturally. It even had condroition and gulcosamine in it so you do not need to give as a suppliment.
Made by the same comapny that makes Chicken Soup for the Dogs Lover's Soul also a great food.
Or Candiae, Wellness, or one of those foods.
I will not feed anything with corn in it or wheat and no by products.
You can find Preimum Edge at www.preimumedge.com
and Chicken soup at www.chickensoupforthepetloverssoul.com
Meta Mills makes both types.

I've had several dobies in the past as well as larger breed dogs. I fed Pedigree food to them. I didn't breed, but I got them at 8 weeks and began feeding them Pedigree Puppy food immediatly. The vet I work for suggets Science Diet, but Pedigree is a bit cheaper. It's still a good brand though.

Without a doubt, Pedigree puppy formula. I have raised 6 dogs on it, they all love it, and are in extremely good health. 95% of the time, I give them the dry Pedigree, but for a treat, the Pedigree puppy line has pouches (in gravy) or cans of great tasting food combos, and the real plus is the wet food does not stink! Pedigree is just as good, if not better, than the fancy, vet-toted brands, and affordable!
