It's a pretty weird suggestion.

Love is something that has been now studied very effectively.

The hormones released in the brain and their impact are well documented as are the different stages of love and the resulting hormonal balances.

This dosen't make my love for my wife any less important.

I understand that the word love is quite abstract any can be used in many ways.

But isn't saying "God is love" taking it a bit too far?

Isn't it just a feelgood copout for people that want to cling to a belief in a creator but don't feel easy with the fire and brimstone stuff?

Because love is a choice and involves action. Feelings that accompany love as you have pointed out do involve complex bio-chemical and electrical impulses in the brain. God has proven his Love as revealed in both Old and New testaments of His given Word. For me it is certainly anything but a copout....it is rather a relationship with the Son of the Living God.

The concept of "God is love" is not only a Christian concept. Hindus also say the same thing - for example.

Love is not caused or restricted to hormones and electrical signals in the brain. Hormones and electrical signals are a byproduct of what happens to what is inside as well as outside of your body.

Something happens and you get angry - adrenaline hits the system and other things happen. They are a result of the anger...not the cause.

God is love...and if you have touched that universal, unconditional love - you would know what I am talking about.

The kind of love God has for us is the principled kind, Agape.
His loving kindness and long-suffering with sinful and many times evil mankind is beyond imagination.
He let's the evil enjoy their lives to the full of their imagination, even permitting them to repent, turn around, and get saved. If not, he punishes with eternal sleep -nothingness, no suffering.

Those that suffer now because of evil and evil people, he promises to undo all of the unnecessary evil in Paradisaic earth where even the unrighteous will be brought back -- brought back to a world ruled by Christ the king of God's kingdom.
He promises to restore the now partly ruined earth to glory during that reign.

By Faith a true Born again Christian believes that Jesus Christ is the living "Word" of God. By faith we also believe that the Holy Bible is the "Word" of God. By faith we believe that the Bible is God talking to us, it is His "love" letter to us. Therefore by "faith" we believe the Bible. The Bible tells us in 1 John 4:8 "GOD IS LOVE".
God is Spirit and the statement "God is Love" has nothing to do with human hormonal balances.

I would have thought all Christians would say that God is Love - it's in the Bible - 1 John 4:8.

Look you got it all mess up, yes God (creator of the universe) is love because he forgives and protects his people. But also he is a God of discipline and justice. You see, people who do evil will fall by their own weigth sooner or later. Don't judge God by what people tell you, bad things happen to people because the devil is here to destroy. God's love is like fathers' love towards a son or daughter

God "loves" when it is appropriate to love.
God also hates alot of things. To just say God is love, period, isn't really accurate.
Why would a person think that God loves the molestation of a small child? He doesn't; he hates it. Just as He hates people who teach lies about Him. Example:
The rapture. Read Ezekiel 13:18 and on....
God hates those who teach his people to fly to save their souls.....
God also hated Esau while he was still in the womb...Why? Because of what Esau did when before Adam and Eve came on the scene, Esau went against God in the war with Satan, which was before the foundation of this earth age that we live in now. God doesn't just love, and God doesn't just hate - just like you, he has a reason for what He hates and what He loves.

Most people can't get a handle on the concept of "God" unless they assign attributes to God.

Without attributes, God has no names or forms.

Unless something has names and/or forms, people can not "think about" it, perceive it (get a handle on it) or worship it.

First Of All, not all of us (I'm Christian-Catholic) say 'God is love'. If someone does say that, they mean love is a strong emotion and they are thankful God gave it us. Saying 'God is love' means they are grateful of God's doings to forgive us and sacrifice himself for us, despite the fact we sinned.

God is the original love. Love as we know now and "Hollywood" love is the cop-out. God first loved us... that is why He created us. God is also called the Great I AM. Why? Because He is the original everything. There was nothing, and He created ALL. (except sin.)
