The Gyro is meat, usually lamb, roasted on a vertical spit, then thinly sliced, topped with onions, and usually served in a sandwich of pita bread.
btw...the word "gyro" is properly pronounced "YE-row" to rhyme with "hero".

A gyro sandwich is like a pita wrap. The meat in it is ground up chicken, beef and lamb that is pressed together and then roasted on a vertical spit, like a rotisserie chicken but standing on end. They slice this as it turns on the spit, piling the slices onto the pita bread. It is served with lettuce, chopped tomatoes, and yogurt sauce.
It's quite delicious, but I prefer shawarma, which is the same but made of stacked chicken breasts then sliced in a similar fashion.

it is the sandwich (if you want to call it that) -- more like a wrap. They have soft shells of pita bread that are loosely wrapped around the meat, vegetables, feta cheese, etc. and are YUMMY! (I just ate one for lunch yesterday)
