Rain water is like distilled water and except for what it picked up in the atmosphere it is pretty clean.
People often use it to wash their hair because of the lack of minerals
Some time it can be pretty icky you know, acid rain but in general it is pretty clean.

It matters of the area you are living in.
If it is the big city, the rain may not be the best thing. Just try water.
If you are in an not polluted or a big city like New York City or something around the area. Try it....
I think if you want to use rain water, try boiling it first then you can do what ever you want to.
Rainwater can be used to water your lawn, flowers, or anything around the area, after you save the rainwater, and it has been a while since it has rained.

Rain water that is collected off the roof can be dangerous if not treats with Clorox . There are bird droppings that have some bad bugs but Clorox will take care of it. 4 table spoons to the gallon and if it is a little strong boil it will flash off most of the chlorine. I lived in Ecuador 12 years and we treated the city water just in case.

it used to be clean ,today a lot of rain water can be unsafe to drink because of airpolution,
they discoverd polution on the poles that had come from cities across the globe
.
the best is to collect (waterharvesting )in ponds with fish and aquatic plants ,then you can drink it as well as everything else
the aquatic life cleans it .

Nowadays, I don't think rainwater is clean. But it could be refined and purified for usage. This is because of pollution.

It depends on how polluted the air is where you live.
Rain water is distilled water (by evaporation) but it can pick up pollutants from he air between the clouds and the ground.
