your body produces digestive fluid,, to break down food,,,,, often if you havent eaten in a long time, your body might still produce the fluid,,,,,, so it irritates your stomach,,,,, also, just like your body will let you know when you are sleepy, or tired, it sends off signals to you when your hungry, thus the feeling

Your stomach produce gastric fluid, which is acidic. So when there is no food there you only have the "acid", which causes your stomach to growl and sometimes hurt.

Ah! I have wondered this question for a very long time! My theory is: when your stomach is empty, it kind of shrinks up, causing you to feel all types of stuff! I really have no idea. But good question.
