there is no markings on either of the tabs to which is positive and which is negative. i have the positive hooked up to the bigger tab but it sounds kinda flat. hope someone can help me

The wider terminal on the back is always the positive; the narrow is always negative. Reversing the two won't make the speaker sound any different by itself, but if you have two speakers that are wired differently from each other, it will affect the sound quality.

If one tab is, in fact, larger this is positive. Usually, if they are the same size, the positive is on the right (speaker faced down).
If it sounds 'flat' like you mentioned, maybe they are backwards at the radio/amp.

yes the wider terminal is positive the other terminal is where the wire with the black stripe plugs in

TRY SWITCHING THEM AROUND BUT DONT TURN IT UP TOO LOUD . IF IT STILL SOUNDS SHI!! YOU MIGTH NEED A BEETER BOX, AMP, OR EQ. BUT I DO RECOMEND FREE AIR SPEAKERS WHEN IT COMES TO PIONEER.
