We just got a great dane pup yesterday. He's been awake the whole night and went upstairs, now he couldn't go back down (LOL)- I think he's scared. He's so huge, how can we have him go down by himself? Also it took sometime before we could get him inside the house. We waited for him patiencly but now that he is inside, he won't go out Please tell me what to do, please! ;-)

Thank's a bunch in advance!

With a Great Dane you will want to enroll in a training class most definitely. I also have a Dane and I moved from a house into an apartment on the second floor and he hated the stairs. Take him on his leash and build some momentum to go down the stairs, If he pulls back then it won't work without hurting someone. Then try ... With him standing at the top of the stairs move down about 3-4 steps and just sit there. Eventually he will come to you, then move down 3-4 more stairs until you get down to t he bottom. Remember he takes his ques from you, so be patient, don't get upset, stay calm, but be assertive. Sounds easy enough right? Took 3 weeks of carrying my Dane up the stairs to get him to do it by himself. Good luck :)

I recently took in a rescue Dane who was the same way. She had never been in a house in her life, but tied outside for 2 1/2 years. It sounds like this boy may be the same way. You'll have to coax him up and down stairs a few times, walk beside him so he isn't scared and hold a treat to tempt him. Once he has done it a couple of times, he will be fine. He doesn't want to go out, because he is afraid he will be left out there. Sounds like this poor boy has had a very bad time wherever he was.

Enrol him in obedience class right away, not only to teach him manners, but to get him socialized with people and other dogs. You will have to put him on a leash to get him outside, stay with him and bring him back inside. He needs to learn that he won't be left alone. That is probably his biggest fear at the moment, plus all the strange things he is not used to.

Once he settles in, you will find that you have a huge heap of love!

Well Danes are notoriously timid when they are pups. It's endearing I think to see these huge pups so afraid of things. Be patient with your pup, let him come out on his own. To get him back outside leave the door open and sit maybe a foot away from door, he will probably cry for you when he does gently call to him he will eventually come to you and when he does come out praise him and stay outside with him until he's done his business then take him right back inside so that he sees he won't be left outside alone. Secondly, be careful with stairs as giant breed dogs have a tendency to be clumsy and he could injure himself coming up and down stairs. Just be patient he'll learn to conquer his fears when he knows he has you for protection..lol.

Be patient and calm. Help him outside and praise him for going outside even if he is helped. Make it a fun thing. As for stairs it sometimes takes a while for Dane pups to learn this concept because of their size and getting everything co-ordinated.Also be advised that a Dane pup should be limited in stair climbing.
Use a "fun" voice and lots of treats and praise when teaching him.

Awww he sounds sooo cute! The poor thing is not settled in and needs to get used to his new environment. Spend alot of time talking to him and set up a little section of the living room for him with his bed and toys. My Chihuahua wouldn't come up or down the stairs either when I fist got him. I carried him for the first few times and eventually he would want to come up so bad that he'd just do it, and now he's climbing stairs like a pro =D I think your pup is just not completely settled in, and you need to encourage him and and reward him with your voice when he does something right. Good luck!

comments variety on whether or no longer this surgical operation enables shrink the possibilities of his abdomen flipping. some vets do no longer desire to do the tummy tacking through fact then you definately've greater scar tissue to handle if the tummy does turn later in life. With a spay (woman canines), you're in the community besides so the surgical restoration isn't from now on. With a neuter (male canines), you do no longer usually bypass into the tummy, so that is like having him spayed and neutered restoration-smart. doggies get well speedier than adults, so in case you comprehend you desire to do it, now could be greater effective. The deafness would not placed him in hazard, yet being a Dane does. that is pronounced as GDV, gastric dilation and volvulus, in case you desire to google it. some non-surgical issues you're able to do to diminish his threat: raise his nutrition and water so he would not swallow as lots air whilst ingesting. do no longer enable him suck down an entire bowl of water at as quickly as. do no longer workout him or enable him run loose on an entire abdomen. supply him an hour after ingesting earlier you play. And comprehend the indicators: mild gums, hassle respiration, large and troublesome abdomen, racing heartbeat, unexpected onset of indications. It does require on the spot medical intervention if GDV occurs.

Dogs have to learn how to navigate stairs. They are much less afraid going up than down. Sounds to me like your puppy is looking down those steps and afraid of falling. So now is the time to start teaching him how to go down one leg at a time. You need to entice him in a sweet voice but you may also need to place one foot on each step and than get his feet in the proper configuration of which one should move next and teach him how to walk down the stairs, by placing his feet on each step on the way down so he finally figures it out. It shouldn't take to long to teach maybe 3-5 times also starting with smaller staircases is smarter, but now you are stuck as he went up himself, of course you could carry him but he must be big.

To the dog you are the Alpha. Put him on a leash, and take him outside. Take him back inside. Introduce him to the yard first on the leash. Let him get used to the new surroundings slowly. In a week take him out into the neighborhood. He just needs to get used to everything.

Dogs feed off your energy so the first thing to do is be calm and assertive. He may have fallen down the stairs once before and could be scared of them. Poor guy! Gently coax him, try treats and if all else fails you may have to carry him. Be careful!
