Because it tends to unite large groups of people who can then be manipulated by those seeking to mould the society to their desires.
I assumed you meant important, if you mean impotent, it isn't.

Religion is not! Classic mistake.
What effect did Christianity have on early society in it's homelands - virtually none - it was a minority.
Many civilisations had numerous Gods and idols such as Greek and the Mediterranean countries.
Indeed most religions - including Christianity - believed in animal and human sacrifice - hardly civilised.
Time someone actually contemplated the fact that religions probably act to hold back the growth of civilisations! Certainly a lot of Christians refuse to believe in science and seek to force schools to teach creationism!
The world is moving on and becoming more civilised but it is because good thinking, good science and common sense is being used - not religion!!!

If religion is so impotent, why do 95% of all human beings STILL believe in a higher power?
If I could buy stock in religion, I'd sink everything I had into it. It's a sure thing!

If God created all the people of the earth, would He not put a desire in their heart to seek Him, know Him, to please Him? Are not all the people of the earth aware that they have sinned against God and try to appease Him with their sacrifices in one way or another?
Rom 1:20 For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities— his eternal power and divine nature— have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.
Rom. 2:14 When Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature things required by the law, they are a law for themselves, even though they do not have the law, 15 since they show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts now accusing, now even defending them.

organised religion makes multiple people beleive the same things, have the same norms and values. which makes it a lot easier for them to work together. because they know what to expect from one and another and what is expected of them.
when two different religions work together there always is the culture difference that will hamper them working together.
see: northern ireland, sunnai, shinit, hutsies and tutsies etc.
theres nothing more anoying than when youre on holiday, and you inadvertantly insult the hostess, because you didnt slurp while dining. (in japan e.g. its polite to slurp. in europe its a faux pas)
in the end: religion makes culture, and culture is important to make people be able ot work together well.
