1 The Mighty One, God, the LORD,
speaks and summons the earth
from the rising of the sun to the place where it sets.

2 From Zion, perfect in beauty,
God shines forth.

3 Our God comes and will not be silent;
a fire devours before him,
and around him a tempest rages.

4 He summons the heavens above,
and the earth, that he may judge his people:

5 "Gather to me my consecrated ones,
who made a covenant with me by sacrifice."

6 And the heavens proclaim his righteousness,
for God himself is judge.

I take it to be a psalm about the almighty power of God, who is depicted here as judge of all the earth.

1 - God is God of all the earth, and He summons the whole earth, which is all completely under His command.

2 - The Temple was in Jerusalem (Zion), and God was believed to dwell specially there, above the Temple. From there, the beauty of God shines forth.

3 - God will not ignore justice. He is the judge, and as such, He will destroy whom He wills. The destruction ("fire") comes from God.

4 - God is God of both the heavens and the earth. He is judge over all.

5 - God will bring the Jewish people to Himself (probably to give them relief from their exile and suffering).

6 - God is righteous and just, and this fact is proclaimed in the heavens.

God commands the entire earth and all contained therein. From His holy place and with the power and the right which are His alone, He will judge all and gather to His bosom those who have set themselves aside for His use and glory. Let all that I am and all that I do be a sacrifice to Him for He is the only one I am accountable to.

This psalm tells of the coming of Christ and the day of judgement, in which God will call men to account.

God will receive those who are 'covenanted' to Him through the sacrifice of Jesus, i.e. those who are saved

It is only through this sacrifice of Jesus that we can be accepted by God.

Well, if my understanding serves me right, it is obsolete already. We sacrifice animals nowadays for celebrations and absolutely no more human sacrifices.

Like most myths, it's a story about power and how power can be abused.
