Social security is not a quick fix at the moment--they are automatically turning people down and it takes at least several appeals to get on. Try getting him on welfare to get medicaid.
Also get him to the county mental health facility. The one in my county does a sliding scale payment and they take medicaid, so he will pay nothing. Since you say he is schizophrenic, he must have been diagnosed by somebody somewhere--contact them and see if they have ideas you don't get here.

Because of his having a permanent mental illness he needs to apply for disability through social security. He could get about $788 a month for the rest of his life. Plus he qualifies for state medical insurance because he is mentally ill. He also qualifies for Medicaid. So you need to help him apply for the free medical insurance that is available for low income or disabled people. You can go to your local mental health dept and they can help him with all of this and they will either not charge him or have him pay on a sliding scale.
What he needs is to see a psychiatrist so he can get his medication and then see a therapist for counseling.

I know somebody that is in the same boat as your brother. Tell your brother to go to the county (ie social servcies) set up an appointment with one of their doctors and they will perscribe you with a medication if needed and they will find you someone to talk to, and it costs absolutely nothing, the county pays for it. Just call your county (socialservices) and go from there.

Find a mental health clinic. These places usually charge according to the ability to pay. Good luck.

Take him to Mental Health, they go by a earning scale, and he may not need to pay anything, plus they can also get him free meds, monthly from the people that make the medications, for those that can not get it, and need it.
