If you never turn it back on, then it will be cheaper to turn it off.

Cheaper? No,I don't think so. For all the time it takes to re-heat or re-cool that same environment, it may be more economical to just change the thermostat to a lower temperature and keep it there. For the time it takes to have to reheat or re-cool everything in your space,it is by far cheaper to keep an even temperature. Of course most "experiments" don't take into account all the furniture and so forth that your house is full of. Remember, that ever thing in your house stores heat.

It's cheaper to turn it OFF. The efficiency of the heating and cooling units are pretty good what might not be good is the efficiency of the area it is heating/cooling. This means that the units can easily overcome the initially cooling/heating, but may have to work very hard to maintain that constant temp. In an EXTREMELY efficient space it may be cheaper to maintain the constant temp. There are many factors that can affect this: Passive/active heating/cooling, efficiency factors, and temperature extremes.

Turning it off is always cheaper. That way you are not heating or cooling empty space.

This has been proven by actual experiments.
