John sells his book world wide but also offers it for free download online.
The book is structured really well and goes into as much depth as you choose. My only gripe is that it is all in imperial, but it really is one of the best homebrew books/sites around.

A company I use to make very good wine is eckraus.com. You will be able to make very good wines in as little as 28 days. Its is not cheap but will still be less than going to the store to buy good wine. You can expect ( depending on what supplies you already have) to spend about $3.75 a bottle for good wine. The same class of wine would probably sell for a lot more.
I make Cabernet Sauvignon for about $2.85 a bottle and people have told me it is as good as $20.00 a bottle wine.
If you have to buy everything, starter kits, bottles etc. You can expect your first batch to cost about 6 bucks a bottle or more. They also sell beer making supplies at eckraus . I have wine bottles and tanks from when I used to make beer so my average batch ( about 30 bottles) costs me about 85-90 bucks.

I have to agree with another answer here. John Palmer's book on how to brew is a good choice. I have met him and listened to his talk about the book. It is a good way to start the brewing process.

I'm not sure...I've never tried to brew a bear...it seems like it would get really angry. Who knows though, there's a website for everything these days
