Then almost everyone I know who has lost a pet gets another one within a month. How can they even compare this lost to a child? That is absolutley ridiculous. You never get over losing a child.

Because they are shallow. I don't have children but I do have a dog that I love very much. I would be very sad if I lost him. However, I could never compare that to the loss of a child. Seriously people you can get over losing a pet but you can NEVER get over the loss of a child. GET REAL!!

i dont have any children yet and i can never imagine what it would be like to lose a child. I'd say that most of the time comments like that are just a kind of analogy to try and explain the reall grief that a person can feel losing a pet.

my family and i had to put our adored lab retriever to sleep 2 days ago and i can tell you that for us it really is like a death in the family. i guess it all depends on how much you personally value your dog/cat/pet, and how closely attached you have become to them. everyone is different of course but for us it has been really devastating- he was so very, very loved by us all.

My parents, sister & i emigrated from the UK 24 years ago & have no other family here........so for us, the pets we have brought into our home are as loved as family. They share your happiest and darkest moments & become an integral part of your life. when i have been sad or upset my pets have made me laugh and seemed to intuitively know that i needed some comfort from them. i know for some people it seems crazy to imagine that anyone could love a pet so much that their loss is so consuming- & i respect that for some people a pet is just a pet that hangs out in the backyard.... but for others like me & my family, our pets share our homes, sit with us in winter and snuggle up on the couch, and warm our toes while they sleep at the bottom of our bed.

i guess most people get another pet because the new puppy/kitten fills a void that the old pet has left. it certainly isnt to 'replace' them...infact i think if you asked most people they would say that they actually struggle with the idea of getting another dog/cat because they DONT want to feel like they are replacing the lost one........ bcos it almost feels like you are betraying them......or 'getting over it' ......when in reality you still feel very sad. thats how i feel anyway.

our dogs & cats give us so much happiness without asking for anything much in return, their affection is priceless. This is why for some of us, losing them is a most incredibly heartbreaking experience.....i dont really expect other people to always understand how it feels to lose a loved pet...... but i do hope that my feelings of grief if not understood, will be respected as personal and genuine.

Because to some people that pet IS their child, and possibly their only family member. And some people love their affectionate, trusting, loving, devoted pet and and feel the same loss from the death of that pet as they would a child, and never get over it. Also some people have never lost a child, but have lost a pet they have raised and had for years, and liken that feeling to the loss of a child. There is nothing ridiculous about a person's emotions and how they feel about something!

Well..it is just a mare comparison, there's nothing to take it seriously..when one's pet become so affectionate and intimate over so long time then..it's normal to get hurt at the sudden death of one's pet..pet can be bought after its death but the intimacy, faith and love that has been developed over the time period can't be found so soon..or even those can't be found from the new pet either...however it may seem riddiculus and absurd and unusual to compare a pet dog or cat to a child or human being either...but is probably arises from one's passion, mourn and agony of losing a intimate friend ..even it may be just a dog or a cat...

I believe they say that it's like losing a child because that pet has been with them through everything and they love it so much. I also believe that they get another one because they can't go on without a pet. For the same reason many parents have another child after they lose one.

I sure would not call it like losing a child but I think that it is closest to that than say having your TV break. It is a living creature that you have grown very close to over the past 10-16 years and it can be quite sad to lose that friend.

You're right. It's an exaggeration and it's ridiculous. I have always been hurt in one way or another by the death of a pet, but it can't compare with the death of a child. I've never been faced with the latter, but at least I have a child and I noticed how many people answered this who don't have a child and still insist it's a reasonable comparison. It is not. It's a sign of a self-indulgent person, though, to claim that it is.

your right, i'd never get over it if i lost a child, however, I love my dog so much that I would probebly have a heart attack if something happened to her. She is my constant companion. No she couldnt be replaced. And I miss all the critters I have ever known and lost. The pain is almost unbearable. And as older people get pets that are their only source of companionship they develop a strong bond with them, and they are like a child to them. Some people have more love for animals than others. I've never met a critter I didnt like.

They say dogs are men's best friend. What happen if your dog or cat suddenly gone and what will you feel? Sad of course! Maybe people think a pet as a child too, because they also got lives.

Praise God I have never lost a child. But I have lost a grandchild...there is no comparison for me in the loss of my grandson and the loss of a beloved family pet. I love my pets dearly, and have had several dogs that lived into their teens and currently have a 20 year old cat.

But my feelings are just that...mine...I would not judge another person's emotional response to death.

Have you ever lost a child.. or a pet??? Both are huge losses in your life... both love unconditionally... .... you care for both in much the same way.. feed.. house... ....

Neither is something you will ever forget... neither can ever be replaced.. you may be able to get another pet.. but it will never be the same as the last.. just as you could possibly have other children.. but again.. it would never be the same...

I would not say it's the same as loosing a child... ..... but in for many people it is similar...
