No, an invertor can't replace UPS. It is much more than that. You are likely to crash your computer's hard drive, if there are too many powercuts and you are using invertor.

An inverter converts DC to AC. A UPS charges a battery which is hooked to an inverter - normally sealed in one unit.
The UPS serves to bridge time if there is a power outage, one component of the UPS is an inverter. You can't really do anything with just an inverter - you will need batteries and a way to charge them. After buying the batteries and charger (or solar cell, wind turbine, generator, etc), you will be back to the price of a UPS.

UPS stands for Uninterrupted Power supply. Inverter is one which converts DC power to AC power.
All UPS systems have built in Inverter. In addition they also will have electronic circuit to recognize failure of AC supply to PC or any other equipment and automatically change over to battery supply through inverter inside.
If you can live with power supply interruptions you can use simple Inverter instead of UPS.

UPS wil provide power from the lines as long as the input power is within range; meanwhile the battery is charging. The battery is used only when the input line voltage goes out of range (too low or too high). In an inverter, you are always drawing power from the battery, so it will only last a limited time.

The UPS (Uninterupted Power Supply) not only provides for power to your PC in a power failure, but provides conditioned electricity as well as surge protection. Don't use a simple DC/AC inverter to run your home computer.
