My puppy is scratching. She does not have flees. She is an indoor dog and she is scratching and pulling some of her fur off. Any ideas on how to moisturize her skin?

Don't use human shampoo on a dog. For one thing, it dries out their skin. DO NOT USE DANDRUFF SHAMPOO. It can be toxic to dogs and cats. Go to the pet store and buy an appropriate shampoo (Hartz, BioSpot, Groomax, Perfect Coat, etc.)

When you say that she doesn't have fleas- do you actually have her on flea prevention, or can you just not see any on her? If you don't have her on preventatives (e.g. Frontline), it may be an idea to start and see if that settles her itch- quite a few dogs are allergic to fleas and it can take just one bite for them to start scratching so you often won't see any sign of fleas on them. I'd be especially suspicious of this if she is scratching mainly around the base of her tail/back of her neck.

As to shampoo- oatmeal is usually a good bet for itchy/allergic dogs. If you live in Australia, or are able to buy it o/s, there is an excellent brand called Dermcare. They have a product called Aloveen (oatmeal + aloe vera) which is specifically developed for dogs & cats with itchy/sensitive skin.

I don't know where you live, but if you can find some of a brand called Take one by Kathryn Segura, it is the best shampoo out there for pets. It is lavender scented and will work very well for dry skin on dogs and cats. There is also a conditioner. Ms. Segura lives in the San Fernando Valley and you can probably reach her by telephone. The last I heard she had some bottles left that said for horses, but it is the same formula. Perhaps she has some that she can sell to you. My name is Deborah, just tell her I told you to call. I am one of the owners of the company, which is sort of on hiatus right now. Sorry, I don't have her email.

No, no, pleeeeeease don't put moisturiser on her!!!! Have you used human shampoo on her? Never use one that contains soap on a dog. GIve her a good bath with a proper dog shampoo - get one from your vet if you're in doubt which is best. And don't shampoo her more than twice a month. If she gets dirty in the meantime give her a shower with water only.

PS What's a toy chihuahua, surely a "normal" chihuahua is so tiny they don't make 'em any smaller? She must be microscopic!

Try the vet. recommended Johnson & Johnsons baby shampoo. It is the most tender, gentle shampoo on the market, and is wonderful for the dry skin some dogs suffer from in the winter.

I would try Natural Oatmeal Shampoo, but because it's a puppy, you want to make sure, it won't be too harsh on their skin. I would just, give my vet a call, and see if the Oatmeal Shampoo, would be ok, or if he can recommend something else.

Oatmeal-based shampoo and oatmeal conditioner to match. I suggest Lambert-Kay Oatmeal & Baking Soda, it's a shampoo & conditioner set. You can buy them at any Petsmart/Petco. They smell great, deodorize, and are very soft on the skin. Let both of them sit for 5 minutes before rinsing, and make sure you get all of it off. Good luck!

feed her some mackeral in a can packed with oil. They also make dog treats with omega oil in it. Get some oatmeal shampoo for dogs . Mine does the same thing. I have found that although she doesnt have fleas, when one does get on her and bites, she is allergic to them and will scratch for hours and hours loosing her hair in the process. I use a flea control on her. Make sure you dont have carpet with fleas maybe in it? It only takes one bite to start them scratching. good luck.

Check her food labels.
Corn and wheat cause itching.
Look into Innova, California Natural, Wellness, Canidae, and Artemis. All are great, all have websites.

Tropiclean and Earthbath are the best shampoos for moisturizing.

I use baby wash in the plastic bottle for my dog. It has a no tears formula, and smells really good. Does not seem to ever irritate. She may need some hydrocortisone spray or cream for the itching. It is available over the counter, or you can get a larger dose from your vet.
