Either he will understand and support you, or he'll get mad. If he gets mad, dump him, he won't make a good life partner with that attitude anyway.

say you cant and im too freaking busy but ill see you tonight or tomorrow or somewhat like that. Say "hunny, i got to go, i would love to be there but i cant." It works, it tricks the mind even though it sounds cheesy or stupid.

Let him know when you will be able to see him. Gives him something to look forward to and that you want to be with him.
