Definitely, after her season (not period, it's the total opposite). Puppies can be spayed at 8 weeks - mine was because she came from the RSPCA and because they see the misery that unneutered animals and their unwanted offspring go through, they won't let an animal go until it's been desexed. Do get her done asap or you will have yet more unfortunate unwanted puppies.

Your dog is old enough to be spayed. A female dog can be spayed at 2 pounds or 10 weeks. (Whichever comes last).

Dogs can be spayed in heat, but you do need to be aware that there is a slightly increased risk during the surgery. My best suggestion if you want her spayed during heat is to work with a vet that does animals in heat or pregnant on a regular basis. These vets are more accustomed to being sure that they have all swollen tissues and knowing where to look for slipped material.

I work for Animal Allies in SC. We spay dogs and cats in heat every day.

Your vet will probably want to wait until she is no longer in heat. Just keep her away from unneutered male dogs and make an appointment once she's through this cycle. There's risk with any type of procedure that involves anesthesia, but the risks are small, particularly with a young dog. Discuss the surgery with your vet and follow his or her pre- and post-operative suggestions. That will help reduce the risks.

First of all@ 8 months old she should have seen a vet long ago for her shots &check up for a clean bill of health.@that time you could have got all your answers there as well as getting her used to going to the vet for further visits.Things such as worms, parvo, even kennel cough can kill the pet you love so much,& i dont think you would want to live with that guilt. SO see a vet get a check up &yes it is very safe to spayed her no matter what breed or mix breed she is.

Dogs don't have periods, that's ladies. It's the total opposite! But yes, and when I was little our cat was spayed when she was pregnant - and she was only two months old!!! Too bad for the kittens but my parents wouldn't have kept them anyway. Congratulations on your decision not to bring any more puppies into the world. Talk to your vet ASAP.

PLEASE get your dog spayed. She should be in heat approximately 3 weeks. Make an appt. to have her done as soon after that as possible. Then if by chance she got near a male you would not even know if she had gotten pregnant. It would be way to soon to even know. My vet advices to have them at least 6 months to spay so your fine there. Good luck and KUDOS to you for being a responsible pet owner in wanting not to breed unwanted dogs.

Vets prefer to wait until the dog is out of heat before spaying. But ask your vet, to see what s/he thinks.
Try to keep her away from intact males until then.

Yup, still very safe to spay her. Your vet will likely tell you to wait til she is out of season tho... Keep a good eye on her and don't let her near the boys!

yes, it's safe to spay her no matter what kind of dog she is. however, the vet will want to wait until she's out of heat. just like people their "periods" last different amounts of time.
until then, (unless you want a mess of puppies to find homes for) you will want to "protect" her from "wanting" males. they have doggie diapers (some quite stylish)that you will have to put a doggie maxi pad in to absorb the blood.

Of course it is safe to spay her. Having her cycle won't make a lick of difference. They even spay cats and dogs who are pregnant (which I don't really agree with). Obviously it is fatal to the pups and kittens.
