Religious people are so stupid because they have been brainwashed. They have never thought for themselves-- they have been indoctrinated and programmed and put on guilt trips if they dare to think outside their boxes.

Interesting that your Question got through. A couple of months ago I asked the same question just to see what would happen, but put the word atheist rather than religious in. It was rejected!
1] C.S. Lewis [Chronicles of Narnia] Considered by many one of the top ten minds of the 20th century. Was an atheist and converted to Christanity.
2] Anthony Flew. Also one of the great minds of the 20th century. A diehard atheist until he studied the amazing design of DNA.
3] Francis Collins. A man of great faith. Also the chairman of the Human Genome project.
Should I go on with several thousand more with better than average I.Q. that are also people of faith.
I guess that I could ask the same question about atheists. Why do they do the stipid things that they do?

I don't think their stupid. I hate that they think their views are absolute. That, and that alone is what irks me. Nothing in life is certain except death and taxes and to think you know the truth is rather arrogant, in my opinion. Your views shouldn't be static, they should evolve and breathe with every bit of new knowledge you obtain. I'm currently an Atheist, but I can't say for sure if I'll feel the same way 20 years from now because life as well as belief aren't absolute.
I hate it when they say god is love and then they turn around and use the word of god to condemn homosexuals, liberals, and nonbelievers. I think that keeps some of us leftward leaning individuals at arms length. It makes them look hypocritical and it keeps their views from evolving to fit an ever changing world. Good people come in every shape, size, color, and creed and it shouldn't matter what you believe as long as your a kind, compassionate individual.
It's true things have been done in the name of god (in name only), but those things were done by power hungry individuals that would obtain their objective by any means necessary, god really had little to do with it. Power is the culprit there, and as we all know, power corrupts.

I'm impressed with many of the answers to this question. I'm an old geezer, and my guess is that many of the people on here are a whole lot younger than I am. And yet, many of you grasp that people can't make gross generalizations; that a person needs to offer some kind of proof (even the supernatural kind--yeah); and that there are people of every stripe living in every environment. Good going! As to the actual question, I think perhaps the questioner who is accusing religious people of being so stupid should check his spelling of "regardless." Is ignorance just a trait of those who believe in the supernatural (religious), or is it a human characteristic that some of us try to change?

The same reason non-religious people are so stupid regardless of how non-religious they are. Bottom line - the world is full of stupid people.
So give your ID card to the border guard
The one that says your Captain Jen-Luc Picard
Of the United Federation of Planets
Cause he won't speak English Anyway
Everybody knows that the world is full of stupid people
So meet me at the mission at midnight
We'll divvy up there
Everybody knows that the world is full of stupid people
So I got the pistol
So I get the Pesos
Yeah, That seems fair

Yes, stupid things were done in name only. The real culprits, as always, are money, control, and power. People will use religion, politics, science, etc. to get these. Ofcourse your agenda is to only point out religion. That were you lose points in seeking out and speaking about the truth.

Until you asked that question, I hadn't realized you were religious. No one can defend the atrocities committed all through history and right this very minute that were inspired by the desire to dominate others using religion as an excuse. But your question qualifies you to fit in any religion and I have to admit you are as good as any one of them.

Flesh will always be against spirit and vice-versa. As long as you're not spiritually regenerated, everything anyone who is so regenerated does will look odd to you. You'll never figure it out no matter how many explanations you get.
On the other hand. People who are trying to reach God in their flesh (religious non-spiritually regenerated people) are going to be doing stupid things and going through all kinds of weird changes because what they're trying to do is impossible.
i.e.:Bhuddists, Muslims, Shintos, Pagans, etc. etc.

I don't think that its fair to say that all religious people are stupid. People are going to do stupid things no matter if they are religious or not. And look at all the stupid things that have been done by those who aren't religious.

Hey....I call out of bounds on this one! There are many peaceful, truly loving and scienctific religions. Paganism, Buddhism and Jainism to name a few. Not all religions are like the Abrahamic death cults of Christianity, Islam and Judaism.
Besides...it's spelled "regardless"...you set yourself up for that one.
