Bless you! It came from an old wise tale that when you sneeze you're trying to rid demons in your body. That's where the god bless you came from. If that's true, we better keep blessing!!

The "immigrated" saying that came from Europe is "Gezondigheid!", which translates directly from German to mean "BLESSINGS!" / "May you be blessed!"
The origin of this saying originates from the European culture to believe that when someone sneezes, the "evil spirits" are cast out from them.
The European immigrants had taken this tradition with them when they came to the USA and it has become so engrained into the American culture.

Why do people feel the need to say anything?
I HATE it when total strangers (or, for that matter, people I know) 'bless' me because I sneezed.

I say, "Bless You"-- because I think its a nice thing to wish blessings on someone.
I have alot of friends who say,"Gesundheit" because they don't know what to say.

bless you, or damn that was a big sneeze, or damn that was nasty cover your nose...say whatever comes to mind when the nasty fool lets their snot and saliva fly i guess!!
