I believe their purpose is to keep evil away from cathedrals, but I have heard Pagan references to them as well. I have also heard the tale they are supposed to have the power of speech when water pours out of their mouths. Has any Pagan ever poured water over a gargoyle for divination?

I have many gargoyles but I have never poured water over one for divination. I don't really think I need too. I just get feelings from mine. If something bad is going to happen, I generally get a "vibe" from them warning me. And I'm sure some people are rolling their eyes but that is how they help me. They each have their own spirit it seems ^_^

No, Pagans were not the ones to use gargoyles, the designer of the building's drainage system was the one who used the gargoyles. Gargoyles, while grotesque in appearance were actually drainage spouts on buildings albiet these spouts were often designed in the form of a grotesque animal or human figure that projected from the gutter of the bvuilding and is desinged to cast rainwater clear of the building..
A Gargoyle is also a "statue of grotesque carved figure", and in certain folklore was said to keep away evil spirits, but "folklore" is known as "Ethnology"; or the sudy of tratitional stories, music, an customs, local legends, which are stories and gossip that become traditonal within a group of people in a certain locale. Folklore is also described as traditional stories and explanations passed down in a community or country for generations even centuries until they are obsorbed into the communal history of an area or country and are hard to separate from the true history of an area. This is especially true of old European villages where the oral tradition of passing down customs and truths. Education in these remote areas was scarece and it was rare for even the aristocrates to know how to write until the late 18th century, since education was reserved for those in the Church. Even the Monarchs of Central Europe has little use for writing and better they spend their time learning how to defend their land from intuders.
As to wherether any Pagan has ever poured water over a gargoyle in order to attempt divination, all that can be said is it is possible when you take into consideration that the word "Pagan" itself applies to millions of people who have lived after the beginning of the CE and to perhaps hundreds of thousands of millions of Pagans who lived and worshiped BCE. (You do understand that BCE includes all of ancient antiquity which was a time that included the era before monotheism (the belief in a single God, examples; Judaism, Christianity and Islam), an era that even after God revealed himself to Abraham, that was the birth of Judisism and it was not until after the Crucifixtion that the first and still very new "Christains" emerged from the rumble of the ashes Rome left behind.in it;s attemp to destroy all who defied it . It would not be until 345 CE(give or take a decade or so) before Constatine converted to Christianity and with him the entire Civilized World. However, the period before common era, BCE was full of pagan religions of all kinds, in every country, province, known and unknown. For anyone to presume to know what anhy one Pagan may or may not have tried to do is to presume to be as alknowing as God himself is supposed to be. .
I hope this hs helped you better understand the point.. That would be that Pagans are not one religion. There are as many types of sects of pagans as there are Christains, except since paganism was the predominant religion for a much ,much ,much longer time period than any monotheist religion.
So there is no way for anyone to determine if any pagan has ever attempted to practice divination by pouring water over a gargoyle. I hope this helps explain why .

This website gets right to the point and explains how Gargoyles came into use on buildings. Nothing supernatural about it, just asthetics with an interesting history. Nicely done website. Hope this helps.

We keep gargoyles as sort of protective amulets for the household and like to imagine we see them move out of the corner of our eyes, but it's never occured to anyone I know to use them for divination.

Gargoyles, like demons, should be used to prosecute evil people within the church and cathedrals. Pagans may use gargoyles but Satanists control them, along with any sinful people within churches who re-write scriptures and abuse people, like through computer hacking and other forms of inhumane invasion of privacy!

Some use them, though I believe they are more for decoration in most cases.

No, I have never poured water over one for divination.

This one stumps me. I don't know, but I only noticed gargoyles in, like, Vampire movies, LOL. I have seen them on old buildings, though. Blessed Be, Wynter Ravyn.

I am wiccan and I use them for protection of my property and family while my family and I sleep. I have never heard of using them for divination. But it is an interesting idea.
